JULY 2006
We've bin recorderin'
We felt it was time to try and capture some of the magic onto cd, if thats possible, and so we found ourselves, waaaaay too early on a sat morning, in exotic Bedford, at CROSSFLOW studios.
Its located beside the arse end of a curry house and a pizza parlour, in what can only be bedescribed as err...a rather
pungent tavistock st.
we are waiting for the sound engineer, Karl, who to be honest was a young lad whos trousers were obviously too big for him, and had way to many piercings and tatoos for our liking,to finish his bacon sandwich.
Not the most glamorous setting to be sure.
Sean did his usual trick, and turned up juuust late enough so all the gear had been set up, and then half heartedly asked if there was anything he could do to help.
Dont worry were used to this by now.
By the look of him, he had drunk enough beer last night to kill a horse, he said a cheerful hello to everyone, drunk a bucket of coffee, pulled his shades down and did what all great singers have done throughout the years...He passed out.
Still,we didnt need him yet as we had lots and lots of musician type work to do.
The studio was everything you expect it to be, 3 separate rooms filled with very expensive gear and a most impressive desk with lots of flashing lights and rows and rows of knobs that we had no idea what they did.
James was in hog heaven as he could kick the shit out of his kit, and because he was in a separate room, didnt annoy us at all with his constant noise...brilliant
Spookily, he shut up whenever Karl told him to, this was a first, as we can usually never stop him once he gets started, and we can only put it down to some form of jedi mind trick... we want to learn how to do this.
On we went with the recording, Karl twiddling his knobs for all he was worth, Mik thundering away in the corner, Andy thowing shapes to himself in the partition glass reflection, James just off in a world of his own trying to kill his kit, and sean still asleep on the couch.
He eventually came to, and ripped his lungs out onto disc as only he can.
3 hours later we had a rough mix of 4 rocking tracks, and let Karl work his magic, whilst we went outside to enjoy get some fresh air, and a fag or 5
When we returned we were astonished at how professional we now sounded, Karl did a fantastic job of capturing the essence of onto a leetle shiny disc........
you wouldnt think it possible that all that noise could fit on something so small!
After a long day, we returned home happy bunies still wondering what exactly all those knobs did - I guess well never know, but they bloody worked!
